52%

52% - that is how many residents of Burlingame ARE RENTERS - Let's turn that into POLITICAL POWER.

The egregious rent increases we are experiencing in Burlingame are forcing people from their homes, schools, and communities.  It is NOW that we must unify to stop the displacement and the conditions that are forcing us out.

By paying rent, we pay property taxes, maintenance fees, school, library, and sewer bonds - all the things that homeowners pay for, but we are left with NO PROTECTIONS or tax breaks, unlike landlords and homeowners.  Often, we are treated as second class citizens.

I have started this blog for renters in Burlingame to SHARE our stories about the rental crisis.  We will use this space to exchange information, organize events, and encourage others to join our campaign to PROTECT RENTERS from egregious rent increases, apartment tear-downs and displacement.

THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW:

1.  Attend the City Council meeting at City Hall in Burlingame on MONDAY, OCTOBER 6th at 7:00 p.m.   Tell the Council your story, the stories of your neighbors, family and friends, during the Public Comments period of the session.  We MUST keep showing up and telling them what we want.

2.  Attend our first RENTERS' MEETING on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Il Piccolo Caffe, 1219 Broadway Ave., Burlingame.  We will share our experiences, learn some facts that can help us, and plan our next steps.  (Free refreshments provided by Housing Leadership Coalition!)

3.  WRITE, CALL, E-MAIL, AND PESTER the City Council OFTEN.  Their actions affect us all.  Here is a link to their contact information:

4.  KEEP WATCHING THIS SPACE - send your contact information to me at:

Thank you all for your concern and energy!
